The coffee is, which is rare, both grown, harvested, roasted and packaged in the DR Congo! It provides extra income and work in the area around Virunga National Park (new window), which has been hard hit by both conflict, poverty and disease with both Ebola and corona.
The more than 6000 farmers/women grow the Bourbon and Rumangabo varieties in the nutrient-rich volcanic soils and hull the coffee by washing off the pulp, ensuring the best quality. They are organized in the two cooperatives Kawa Kanzururu on the western side of the Rwenzori Mountains and Coopade in the highlands northwest of Lake Edward.
They are supported by Virunga Origins and Virunga National Park, and are guaranteed a fair price. The production is certified by the Rainforest Alliance.
